St George’s Day Celebrations: Exploring England’s Castles and Seaside Charm with Seashorepics

Every April 23rd, England unfurls its red-and-white flags in celebration of St George’s Day—a tribute to bravery, heritage, and the legendary dragon-slayer himself. While St George’s story is wrapped in myth, the pride and patriotism of the day are unmistakably real. At Seashorepics, we mark the occasion through the lens of our camera—exploring the castles, coastlines, and timeless stories that define England’s landscape and legacy.

This year, we’re spotlighting five extraordinary castles that embody the spirit of St George—Arundel, Leeds, Carisbrooke, Tintagel, and a nod to our beloved seaside scenes that bring England’s coastal culture to life.

Arundel Castle: A Fortress of Grandeur and Legacy

Tucked into the rolling hills of West Sussex, Arundel Castle is a medieval masterpiece with nearly a thousand years of history. Its towering keep and Gothic architecture speak of strength, courage, and noble lineage—perfect symbols for St George’s Day.

At Seashorepics, we’ve captured Arundel in all seasons, but nothing compares to the castle bathed in spring sunlight, surrounded by blooming gardens and flags flying proudly. It’s a true English treasure, steeped in history and majesty.

Bodiam Castle: A Castle on Water, a Reflection of Beauty

Bodiam Castle, with its iconic moat and fairy-tale turrets, stands as one of England’s most picturesque and well-preserved medieval fortresses, offering a captivating glimpse into 14th-century life and architecture.

Our photographers at Seashorepics love the way the light plays across the water here, offering reflections that double the impact of this fairytale-like fortress. It’s romance, history, and heritage rolled into one.

Carisbrooke Castle: Island Stronghold of Royal Tales

Over on the Isle of Wight, Carisbrooke Castle reigns as a quiet giant of English history. Famous for imprisoning Charles I, and known for its sturdy walls and panoramic views, Carisbrooke is a symbol of resilience.

Being based near the sea, we’re especially drawn to Carisbrooke for its proximity to the coast. The views stretch across the Isle’s rolling hills to the Solent beyond—reminding us how land and sea have always shaped English identity.

Tintagel Castle: Where Myth Meets the Sea

No St George’s Day celebration would be complete without a nod to the mythical. Tintagel Castle in Cornwall is a place where Arthurian legend, craggy cliffs, and ocean spray collide. Perched dramatically above the Atlantic, this site echoes with ancient tales of heroism and sorcery.

Tintagel is one of our favourite locations to photograph. Its dramatic landscape and timeless legend tie beautifully into the themes of St George’s Day—battles, bravery, and the enduring pull of the past.

Seaside Majesty: England’s Coastline as National Pride

Beyond the castles, England’s seaside remains a powerful symbol of both protection and peace. From the chalky cliffs of the south to the rugged beaches of the north, the coast represents openness, connection, and national resilience.

At Seashorepics, the seaside is in our soul. This St George’s Day, we celebrate not only the stories of warriors and royalty but also the timeless pull of the sea—the crashing waves beside coastal fortresses, the salt-scented breeze around ancient towers, and the way the horizon always invites us to dream.
